Finding Joy in the Everyday

Exploring health, simple pleasures, nature, and the small moments that bring light to life.

As I move through midlife, I’m realizing more and more that making my health a priority isn’t optional — it’s essential. I want to feel strong, energized, and ready for all the chapters still ahead of me.

But what I’ve discovered along the way is this: health isn’t only about exercise and nutrition. It’s also about slowing down, savouring small pleasures, and noticing the beauty in everyday life.

Moving My Body with Intention

Over the past several months, I’ve made strength training a non-negotiable part of my routine — three times a week, even on the days I don’t feel like it. Along with that, I walk almost every day, ride my bike when I can, and this fall, I’m planning to take swimming lessons.

In fact, I’m even entertaining the idea of signing up for a Try-Triathlon next summer — something that feels empowering at 58!

Movement, I’ve learned, is less about chasing a “perfect body” and more about creating a life where I feel capable, resilient, and alive.

Nourishing from the Inside Out

Nutrition has also become a big focus. I’m working on getting enough protein, plenty of fibre, and filling my plate with fruits and vegetables.

When my cholesterol crept up a little, I decided to work with a dietitian to see if I could bring it down naturally. It feels empowering to take those small, steady steps toward better health — not from a place of restriction, but from a place of care.

Slowing Down & Savouring

But health, at least for me, is not only physical. It’s also about the heart and the spirit.

These days, I’m practicing slowing down — through meditation, reflection, and simply paying attention. I find joy in the smallest things:

  • A hot cup of tea in my hands
  • A long walk with Harry, my golden retriever
  • A good conversation with a friend
  • Getting lost in a great book

It’s these ordinary moments that often bring the most extraordinary joy.

Joy as a Daily Practice

Finding joy in the everyday isn’t about adding more to my to-do list. It’s about shifting my perspective — seeing health not as a finish line, but as a way of living.

It’s about moving, nourishing, resting, and connecting in ways that feel good and sustainable. It’s about remembering that life’s richness is often found in the smallest, simplest of places.

And it’s about giving myself permission to enjoy this journey — not just where it’s taking me, but every step along the way.

3 Ways to Invite More Joy into Your Everyday

  1. Move Your Body Daily – It doesn’t have to be perfect or long — a short walk, a few stretches, or some strength training can boost your mood and energy.
  2. Fuel Yourself with Care – Choose nourishing foods most of the time — more vegetables, fruit, protein, and fibre. Not from a place of restriction, but from self-love.
  3. Celebrate Small Wins – Write down one small thing that brought you joy each day — a laugh, a conversation, a moment in nature. Over time, these reminders add up to a life filled with gratitude.
